A lovely loose life study of a reclining female torso by Nick Ivins (b. 1966) which forms part of a new collection of drawings. Nick’s work is a direct and immediate response to the model. His technique is to first lay down the shadow tones with a broad sweep of graphite and then he overlays these areas with contours and outline to add definition. Nick is interested in the shape and structure of the human form and takes a sculptural, energetic approach to his drawing. Like a sculptor making preparatory sketches for a large scale piece, Nick likes to apply a mesh of contour lines over the abstract shape so that it melds together to reveal a strong, solid form.
This simplicity and energy that you see in Nick’s drawing, sits well with our Walnuts Farm aesthetic and is something we are proud to share with you.
